Tips on inviting people and managing invitations
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R February 26 2008. Tagged invitation-process best-practice invitation
Hello,
Here are a couple of pointers to help with the GroupSwim invitation process:
Scenario 1 - Inviting members to the community
1. Click on the "Invite members" link on the main page, from groups, or from manage members. It is almost always available under actions on the right. Depending on how you've configured your site, this option will available to managers or everyone.

2. Fill in the email addresses of the people you want to invite or paste them in. The addresses should be separated by commas. Once you are happy with the invitation, hit the button "Invite Members".
Learn how to train your tags
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R February 11 2008. Tagged tag tagging best-practice
Hello,
We just added (as of 2/11/08) tag training to GroupSwim. This
gives community and group owners and managers the ability to add
preferred tags at a site level and a group level. It also allows
you to add definitions to tags. For example, you can say a tag
is an example of something else. In this case, Tivo is an
example of DVR (Digital Video Recorder). If our semantic engine
sees the word Tivo, it will immediate suggest Tivo and DVR as
suggested tags. Adding tags and definitions will signficantly
enhance the value of your community and the knowledge it
develops. Tag training is for site and group owners and managers only.
Need to be able to edit groups, discussions previously posted
in Question & Answer , last reply by Luke (GroupSwim) at February 3 2008. Tagged contents group groupswim
I'm supposed to be a manager/admin/whatever for newscale-yes at groupswim. However, I don't see anything in the UI that would allow me to edit the title of a group or edit the contents of a discussion. The only edit button I see is the one that allows me to edit the title of a discussion.
Please advise. Am I not set up correctly to get these capabilities? Or am I missing something?

Now that you've turned it on for your site, you'll need to turn it on for each group where you want to use it. Click into a group to turn it on (FAQ on the screen shot below):

Email notification settings

Here is an exchange I had with a customer on how to tune email settings:
Can you un-tag posts to re-tag them?
in Question & Answer , by Jason R October 17 2007. Tagged update tags tagging
We had a customer ask this question because they are rolling out a new tagging scheme and wanted to update some older content. Here was our response.
Thanks for the question. We don’t allow people to un-tag discussions since users may have watchlists based on the tags or the discussions that could be compromised if we deleted tags. IAlso, it doesn't hurt to over tag posts; the alternative is worse. Instead, we suggest you add the new tags to discussions you want to highlight (adding tags to existing discussions is easy). Also, put together a post explaining the tag structure you propose. Use a post at the group level and post it using “email to all” so everyone sees it. A site manager will need to post it if you do the send all option.Identify your future leaders
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R October 16 2007. Tagged leadership best-practice
Here is a blog I wrote on finding leaders using an online community. If you want to check out past blogs, our site is here .
Most organizations, especially commercial businesses, require strong
leadership to be successful. I'm hard pressed to think of an example
where this isn't the case. There is a decent article in Fortune
(10/1/07) about companies that spend significant time and money on
developing leaders. However, it isn't always easy to find your
leaders. You typically need a strong HR process, current leadership
committed to developing leadership, or future leaders who take the
time to aggressively manage their career; many organizations lack all three.
Subgroup order on home page
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R October 10 2007. Tagged best-practice order
If you want to set your subgroups to show in an order other than
alphabetical, you can put numbers in front of the group name.
For example:
01 Group 1
02 Group 2
Sub-group set up tips
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R October 10 2007. Tagged sub-group configuration best-practice
The sub-group permissioning is really powerful. The 4 types of sub groups are:
- Private - this is an invite only option where you want to have discussions in private and members need to be invited/approved to join.
- Public - this is an open group that anyone in the community can join. The only thing to consider here is that the user must take the step to join the group. They either do this when they initially join the community or search sub-groups. If you have lots of groups within the community that are open, this is the best option
