Open groups versus private groups
in Tips & Tricks , by Jason R October 23 2007. Tagged sub-group public-vs-private
Here is an clip of an emai exchange I had with someone on whether to use public or private sub-groups
Generally speaking, I would always advise having sub-groups open versus private. It tends to make the community more accessible and dynamic. Making groups private is fine, but we usually see this when groups are discussing things that are confidential or sensitive.Sub-group set up tips

The sub-group permissioning is really powerful. The 4 types of sub groups are:
- Private - this is an invite only option where you want to have discussions in private and members need to be invited/approved to join.
- Public - this is an open group that anyone in the community can join. The only thing to consider here is that the user must take the step to join the group. They either do this when they initially join the community or search sub-groups. If you have lots of groups within the community that are open, this is the best option
