Here is an exchange I had with a customer on how to tune email settings:

If one of your goals is to reduce emails, make sure you and your community members tune your email settings.  My recommendation is to have the daily digest turned on and use the watch list to monitor tags, people or discussions where you want instant notification.  The other thing to do is use sub groups to monitor very specific events/topics that you want to monitor.  For example, if a bunch of you are planning some kind of specific event, you could create a sub group for it and select the “turn on email alerts for this group” under the actions on the right.  I would only do this if the correspondence needs to be timely.  Be especially careful on this setting if you expect lots of volume.  For any and all of these options, you can always turn things on and off to experiment with the right level of email notifications.  Let me know if you need any more info.  Hope this helps.
