The sub-group permissioning is really powerful. The 4 types of sub groups are:
- Private - this is an invite only option where you want to have discussions in private and members need to be invited/approved to join.
- Public - this is an open group that anyone in the community can join. The only thing to consider here is that the user must take the step to join the group. They either do this when they initially join the community or search sub-groups. If you have lots of groups within the community that are open, this is the best option
- Auto-join - this is an open group that everyone in the community is automatically enrolled in. This option is great for smaller communities with 5 to 10 sub-groups. In this case, we suggest making all your groups this way
- Custom - this option allows you to tune the sub-group to meet your business or community needs. The things you can tune include:
- Post discussions - you can configure the group that only managers can post or you can have anyone in the group post. Manager only is good for FAQ and outbound communication type groups that you want to stay organized
- Reply to discussions - you can determine if members can reply or not. Same as post discussion by manager only, you can keep members from replying if you want the post to focus on outbound communication or document sharing versus an ongoing discussion
- View the member list - you can prevent group members from seeing the member list if you want the membership to stay private
- Invite members - you can set the group to allow members to invite other members or keep this as a manager function only
- Create sub-groups - for the whole community, you can set whether or not to allow members to create their own sub-groups. For a very open community where members are extremely active, this is a good way to give them more freedom. On the flip side, if this is a community where you want to control things more tightly, we suggest keeping this as a manager function
- Upload attachments - you can configure the community to allow users to post attachments or prevent them from doing so.
We hope this helps. Let us know if you have any questions.
