Use auto-join for sub-groups

Unless you have lots and lots of sub-groups on your site, use the auto-join option instead of public group so all your community members automatically see the groups.  If you have too many, use public groups but remind people to make sure they join the groups they want when they first join the site; do this in your welcome email, follow-up email, and announcements in the community
