Hello Swimmers!
We are pleased to present our biggest GroupSwim release yet. Highlights include:
- Two versions of our service: GroupSwim Collaboration and GroupSwim Forums
- A terrific new File Sharing tool which allows you to collaborate in new ways.
- Many other features such as improved Search, reputation enhancements, profile bio, and more.
I’ve spelled out more about each of these below. As always, we welcome all feedback, questions, suggestions, and issues here on The Pool. We’re very excited about this release and hope that it will take your team's collaboration to a whole new level.
Enjoy!
Luke (and the GroupSwim team)
Two ways to Swim
As of today, GroupSwim now offers two distinct services:
- GroupSwim Collaboration is an amazing tool for internal groups, teams and organizations. This service includes our new File Sharing module (see below), posting via email, and more storage per user.
- GroupSwim Forums is ideal for external, customer-facing sites. It is focused primarily on Discussions, and is available for a very low per-user cost. Files can be uploaded as attachments.
All free trial sites default to GroupSwim Collaboration, so you can get a taste of our full feature suite. To learn more about the pricing for each service, or about the differences between them, visit GroupSwim.com.
File Sharing
The highlight of the release, available to all users of GroupSwim Collaboration, is our highly anticipated “File Sharing” module. This tool can fundamentally change the way you and your colleagues manage documents within your organization.
We now offer Files that are fully integrated with our best-in-class discussion and email capability. Users can now upload files, complete with description and tags, and track them on a new ‘Files’ tab. Of course, we added other special touches:
- Files are fully indexed and searchable. Search results show file results right alongside discussions.
- You can preview most files directly on your site without a need for download, including Microsoft Office files, PDFs, Video, Audio, and more!
- Files include integrated version control so you don’t have to manage multiple copies on your desktop, your email, or on your team's servers.
- Related files and discussions are suggested, since everything in GroupSwim is interconnected.
- You can spawn multiple discussions about a file.
- You can email files in to your site, just like discussions.
- Files are integrated with our powerful tag engine for quick discovery.
- You can browse files by type (Documents, Spreadsheets, Images, etc.).
- All existing attachments on your site are automatically transitioned to this new format.
Other new features
We also added several other cool features, including:
- Semantic search: We’ve further refined our already-powerful search engine; it now suggests alternate search terms to guide your search for the best results. These include correcting misspellings, suggesting more fruitful synonyms, and helping you widen or narrow your search as needed.
- Improved authority: We've enhanced the reputation system. Now when you search on a word or phrase, we'll return members who have authority on that topic. We've also tuned our authority algorithm and expanded the number of topics you can have authority on.
- “Main” tab for groups: A new homepage-like dashboard for each group now provides a single view across all activity and content types. This approach also lays the groundwork for additional content types, which we’re already hard at work on.
- Profile bio: We’ve added an ‘About’ section to your profile so you can tell everyone about yourself. It accepts links and other html, so this is a great place to hyperlink to your Blog, Website, Linkedin account, etc.
- Member find: For managers, we’ve added a new power tool to the ‘Manage Members’ area, which allows you to instantly filter your member list by name or email without leaving the area. This should make tracking people down and modifying their accounts much easier.
- Custom terminology: For site owners, we’ve made it possible to rename certain words on your site. Specifically you now can change the term “Groups” to anything you want (e.g. ‘Workspaces, ‘Teams’, ‘Channels’, etc.). Want other terms to be customizable? Let us know.
